As health care evolves, so must its payment system. One proposed strategy scraps the fee-for-service model and, instead, pays providers a set amount for a group of related services. The industry is pursuing these so-called bundled payments (also known as "case rates" or "episode-based payment") as one way—among many—to improve patient outcomes and reduce costs.
